For this exercise it is advised that I study several examples of ‘portrait’ from books and magazines. I am a huge Blondie fan and have been looking at a book by renowned British photographer Mick Rock called ‘Picture This:Debbie Harry and Blondie’ – Mick was know as “The man who shot the 70s”
70s photography has a raw, almost grainy affect which i love. Several of my favourite images in this book are the ones which are not posed (most of them disengage from the viewer as there is no eye contact) and also the images taken while Debbie is performing – they have a sense of ‘action’.
I really like the pink lighting used in these photographs – most of Mick Rocks photographs during these years tended to be black and white.
I have also been looking at portrait work by Sean Gleason. I really like his images of Robbie Williams – again these have a very laid back feel, most of them are in black and white, and there is minimal eye contact with the camera.
